Saket Sports Complex: A Member’s 37-Year Experience of Sport, Community and Change

New Delhi : Once the preserve of elite clubs, sports like squash and swimming became accessible to ordinary citizens when the Delhi Development Authority created public sports facilities across the city. One long-time member reflects on the transformation at the DDA Saket Sports Complex.

I became a member of the Saket Sports Complex in 1989, when I began playing squash. Later, when the swimming pool facility was introduced, I started swimming regularly as well. During my school days, sports such as squash and swimming were largely confined to elite clubs, accessible only to a privileged few.

The vision of the Delhi Development Authority changed that reality. With its “pay and play” policy, high-quality sports facilities became affordable for the common man. The Saket Sports Complex soon emerged as an important recreational space for residents of South Delhi.

Over the last 37 years, I have seen the complex grow into a vibrant community hub. What also makes the place special are its beautiful gardens and seasonal flowers. Especially during spring, the blooming flower beds and well-maintained greenery add a refreshing charm, making the complex not just a sports facility but a pleasant place to spend time.

Another thoughtful policy of the DDA has been to appoint Secretaries from a defence background to manage these complexes. Their discipline and administrative experience have ensured that the facilities remain well maintained.I have seen several Secretaries contribute to its development and upkeep. Each one has played a role in shaping the facility into what it is today.

Lt. Col. Diwakar Pota (Retd.), Secretary, Saket Sports Complex

In recent years, however, Lt. Col. Diwakar Pota (Retd.) has brought a particularly energetic and hands-on style of leadership. Unlike administrators who remain confined to their offices, he is often seen walking around the complex, interacting with members and closely observing the facilities.

Whether it is a sunny morning or a winter evening, Lt. Col. Pota can frequently be spotted in the complex grounds—talking to members, listening to their feedback and guiding staff to ensure their work is carried out efficiently. His approachable personality and visible involvement have strengthened the sense of community among members.

Before joining the complex in 2022, Lt. Col. Pota had an accomplished professional journey. He served the Indian Armed Forces for 22 years in the Corps of Signals, the branch responsible for military communications and information systems.

Notably, he spent nine years in Jammu & Kashmir during the peak insurgency period, a demanding assignment that required resilience and leadership. After retiring from the Army in 2008, he moved to the corporate sector, working with multinational companies as a Project Manager and later as General Manager, overseeing three major National Highway projects for nearly eight years.

Another notable aspect of the complex is the sense of community it has created over the years. Early morning walkers, young athletes, families and senior members all share the same space, creating a friendly and lively atmosphere. Many members, like myself, have spent decades here and have watched generations grow up playing sports in these facilities.

For long-time members, the Saket Sports Complex remains more than just a place for sports. With its facilities, greenery and community spirit, it continues to reflect the original vision that quality sports infrastructure should be accessible to everyone.
