Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday described gaming as a legitimate skill and potential career path, while firmly cautioning students against online betting and gambling-linked games.
Speaking at his annual interaction programme, Pariksha Pe Charcha, the Prime Minister said gaming should not be dismissed as a mere pastime. Instead, he urged students to approach it responsibly and with discipline.
“Gaming is not just a hobby; it is a skill. It involves speed and sharpness, and it can contribute to development,” he said. However, he emphasized that students must choose quality gaming and focus on building expertise rather than wasting time online.
Warning Against Betting
Modi strongly cautioned against games that involve online betting or gambling elements. He reminded students that laws have been enacted to curb betting activities and stressed that cheap internet access should not become a gateway to unhealthy habits.
“Don’t just waste time because the internet is affordable in India. We have made laws against betting, and we will not allow such practices,” he said.
From Gamer to Creator
Responding to a student concerned about societal pressure to prioritise studies over gaming, the Prime Minister acknowledged that parents often discourage unconventional career paths initially. However, he noted that once children achieve success, families take pride in their accomplishments.
He encouraged students to channel their interest productively — not just by playing games but by creating them.
Modi suggested drawing inspiration from India’s rich cultural heritage. He proposed developing games based on mythological and literary themes such as the Panchatantra, stories of Lord Hanuman, or episodes like Abhimanyu’s escape from the Chakravyuh in the Mahabharata.
“In India, there are countless inspiring stories. Why not create games around them?” he said, adding that young developers could share their creations on social media and build recognition.
Skill, Balance and Ethics
The Prime Minister underlined that gaming, when pursued with focus and balance, can become a meaningful career. But he stressed that students must not compromise their studies or fall into gambling traps.
The message was clear: gaming can be a pathway to innovation and entrepreneurship — provided it is rooted in skill, creativity and ethical responsibility.
