Rapper Emerges as Front-Runner for Nepal’s Prime Minister

Youth wave and Gen-Z support reshape Himalayan nation’s politics

Kathmandu: Nepal may soon witness an extraordinary political moment as rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen, emerges as a leading contender for the country’s top political post. Early vote counts from the ongoing parliamentary elections show Shah significantly ahead of several established political leaders. The 35-year-old former rapper, who previously served as Mayor of Kathmandu, has built a powerful support base among young voters frustrated with traditional political parties and corruption scandals. His party, the Rastriya Swatantra Party, is also showing strong performance in several constituencies as counting continues.Shah’s rise is widely seen as part of a broader political shift triggered by youth-led protests last year that demanded transparency, jobs, and governance reforms in the Himalayan nation.

From Rap Music to National PoliticsB

Before entering politics, Balendra Shah was known for his socially conscious rap music that criticized corruption, inequality and poor governance. His track Balidan gained millions of views online and helped build a strong youth following.Born in Kathmandu and trained as a structural engineer, Shah first captured public attention when he ran as an independent candidate and won the Kathmandu mayoral election in 2022. His victory was widely interpreted as a sign that Nepal’s urban youth were ready to challenge the political establishment. Now, his national political ambitions appear to be resonating with a new generation of voters who want faster reforms and more transparent leadership.

Analysts See Generational Political Shift

Nepali political analyst Yubaraj Ghimire believes Shah’s rise signals a major transformation in Nepal’s politics. “The emergence of figures like Balen Shah reflects a generational change in Nepal’s political culture. Young voters are increasingly rejecting traditional party structures and supporting leaders who communicate directly with them,” Ghimire said.He added that social media and grassroots youth movements have played a crucial role in mobilizing support for Shah’s campaign.

Voice of Gen-Z

For many young Nepalis, Shah represents a break from decades of conventional leadership. Aayush Sharma, a 22-year-old university student in Kathmandu, said the younger generation sees Shah as someone who understands their frustrations.“Our generation wants transparency, jobs and dignity. Balen speaks our language — literally and politically. That’s why Gen-Z is supporting him,” Sharma said.

A Political Moment to Watch

Nepal’s politics has long been dominated by traditional parties such as the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist). But the surge of a rapper-turned-politician signals a possible turning point in the country’s democratic journey. If current trends continue, Nepal could witness one of the most unusual political developments in South Asia — a hip-hop artist rising to the highest political office in the country.
