EC Issues Ultimatum Ahead of Bengal Polls, Warns TMC Against Malpractices

Kolkata | April 8, 2026

In a strong pre-election move, the Election Commission of India has issued a clear warning to the ruling All India Trinamool Congress, signalling strict enforcement of electoral rules in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections.

Senior officials indicated that the Commission is determined to ensure free, fair and violence-free polling, cautioning that any deviation from established norms will invite immediate action.

Zero Tolerance for Electoral Violations

The Election Commission has specifically flagged concerns over:

  • Booth capturing
  • Booth jamming
  • Voter intimidation
  • Misuse of state machinery

“This time, elections will be conducted strictly as per the law,” officials reiterated, underlining a zero-tolerance approach to any malpractice.

Enhanced Security and Monitoring

In a bid to prevent irregularities, the Commission is expected to:

  • Deploy central armed police forces in large numbers
  • Increase surveillance at polling booths
  • Expand use of webcasting and micro-observers in sensitive constituencies

West Bengal has often seen allegations of poll-related violence, making these measures particularly significant.

Political Undercurrents

The warning to the Trinamool Congress comes amid heightened political tensions in the state. Opposition parties have welcomed the Commission’s assertive stance, alleging that stricter oversight is essential to ensure a level playing field.

The ruling party, however, has rejected allegations of wrongdoing, asserting its commitment to democratic processes while accusing rivals of politicising the issue.

A Crucial Electoral Test

The upcoming Assembly elections are being seen as a key test for both the ruling establishment and the Election Commission’s ability to enforce electoral integrity in a politically sensitive environment.

Bottom Line

With the Election Commission drawing a firm red line, the West Bengal polls are set to unfold under unprecedented scrutiny, raising expectations of a cleaner and more transparent electoral process.
