The Election Commission of India on Saturday announced the schedule for the 2026 Assembly elections in four states and one Union Territory—West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry.
According to the poll schedule, voting in West Bengal will be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, while Tamil Nadu will vote in a single phase on April 23. Meanwhile, elections in Kerala, Assam, and the Union Territory of Puducherry will take place on April 9.
The Election Commission stated that all necessary arrangements are being put in place to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections, including the deployment of security forces and monitoring teams across the poll-bound regions.
The upcoming elections are expected to witness high-voltage political campaigns, with major national and regional parties gearing up to contest fiercely for power in these key states.
These elections are seen as politically significant, particularly in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, where regional parties traditionally dominate the political landscape, while the contests in Kerala and Assam are expected to feature intense competition between national alliances.
The Election Commission is expected to announce the date for counting of votes later, following the completion of the polling process.
Political parties are now preparing to launch extensive campaigns as the election season officially begins across the five regions.
