Malayalam Cinema in Focus at Stuttgart Indian Film Festival

New Delhi/Stuttgart, July 1: Malayalam cinema will headline the 23rd Stuttgart Indian Film Festival, to be held from July 23 to 26 in Germany, with a line-up of more than 70 feature films, documentaries and short films showcasing India’s diverse storytelling traditions.

The festival will also present a strong documentary section featuring films on senior women changemakers, transgender rights, tea plantation workers, migrant labourers, endangered folk traditions and environmental conservation. Several films focusing on LGBTQIA+ stories and indigenous communities are also part of this year’s programme, reflecting the festival’s emphasis on socially relevant and inclusive storytelling.

The festival will open with Dinjith Ayyathan’s Malayalam thriller Eko – From the Infinite Chronicles of Kuriachan. Other highlights include Lokah – Chapter 1: Chandra, featuring Malayalam cinema’s first female superhero, the survival thriller Meesha – Moustache, and the hit boxing drama Alappuzha Gymkhana.

Alongside feature films, the festival will screen documentaries on women’s empowerment, LGBTQIA+ rights, migration, environmental issues and India’s cultural heritage. Despite a shorter four-day schedule due to reduced funding, organisers say the festival will continue its tradition of presenting Indian films in their original languages with English subtitles, offering European audiences a rich cinematic experience beyond Bollywood.

The festival will also honour excellence in Indian filmmaking through its German Star of India awards across feature, documentary and short film categories. Several premieres, including world, European and international premieres, are scheduled during the four-day event, reaffirming the festival’s position as one of Europe’s leading platforms for contemporary Indian cinema.
