New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced the formation of a high-level task force headed by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani to recommend reforms aimed at strengthening India’s examination system and restoring public confidence following a series of exam paper leak controversies.
In a video message posted on X, the Prime Minister said the panel would examine ways to improve the country’s examination process and submit its recommendations to the government.
“Based on that report, the work to ensure the reliability of upcoming examinations will be done,” PM Modi said.
Emphasising the government’s commitment to safeguarding students’ interests, the Prime Minister said strict action was being taken against those responsible for compromising examination integrity.
“For the future of students, the Government of India is continuously taking several steps. Those who played with the future of students are rotting in jails. We have set up fast-track courts. Tomorrow in Parliament too, we are moving forward in the direction of making a new law with strict legal provisions,” he said.
The announcement comes a day after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned amid mounting pressure over repeated examination paper leaks and allegations of lapses in the conduct of competitive examinations.
The resignation followed weeks of protests by students and civil society groups, including demonstrations led by the satirical political collective Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which demanded accountability and sweeping reforms in the examination system.
The Nilekani-led task force is expected to consult experts and recommend measures to improve transparency, security and technological safeguards in the conduct of examinations across the country.
