Mumbai: After days of relentless monsoon showers, Mumbai witnessed a brief pause in rainfall on Tuesday, bringing temporary relief to residents. However, the city continued to grapple with severe waterlogging, traffic snarls, and disruptions to public transport as floodwaters lingered in several low-lying areas.
Despite the improvement in weather, many roads remained inundated, slowing vehicular movement and affecting suburban train services. Civic authorities continued pumping out water and clearing blocked drains, while commuters faced delays during peak hours.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has downgraded its warning for Mumbai from a Red Alert to an Orange Alert but has cautioned that heavy to very heavy rainfall may continue over the next 24 hours. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated with official weather advisories.
The recent spell of intense rainfall has once again exposed Mumbai’s long-standing urban infrastructure challenges. Experts point to inadequate drainage systems, rapid urbanisation, and encroachment on natural water channels as key factors behind the city’s recurring monsoon flooding.
