I first met Prabhat Verma nearly two decades ago at Taj Kochi, where he was serving as the General Manager. I was on a business trip and, until then, we had never met. Our first interaction was a brief exchange in the hotel lobby, but what followed left a lasting impression.
Later that evening, Prabhat graciously invited us to dinner. What was meant to be a courtesy interaction turned into a long conversation on hospitality, leadership, people management and the future of the Indian hotel industry. His calm demeanour, clarity of thought and passion for creating memorable guest experiences stood out. I came away with the impression that he was destined for much bigger responsibilities within the Taj Group.
Two decades later, that impression has proved well founded.
Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), India’s largest hospitality company, has announced a major organisational restructuring under its ambitious Accelerate 2030 strategy and appointed Prabhat Verma as Chief People Officer, entrusting him with Human Resources, Sustainability and Business Excellence.
The appointment is part of IHCL’s roadmap to expand its portfolio to 700 hotels, double consolidated revenues to ₹15,000 crore, and achieve a 20 per cent Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) by 2030.
A hospitality professional with more than 30 years at IHCL, Verma has built his career across several brands and geographies. Prior to his elevation, he served as Executive Vice President – Operations, overseeing business performance across South India and international markets. Under his leadership, IHCL’s premium offerings, including The Chambers, J Wellness Circle and Khazana, expanded significantly while maintaining the company’s reputation for service excellence.
Announcing the leadership changes, IHCL Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Puneet Chhatwal said the company is restructuring its operations into two focused verticals—Traditional Businesses and Growth Businesses—to support its next phase of expansion.
The new organisational structure is designed to improve execution, enhance agility and create stronger synergies across IHCL’s growing portfolio, which today comprises 645 hotels across 300 locations in 15 countries and spans 14 hospitality brands.
Alongside Verma’s appointment, Gaurav Pokhariyal has been promoted as Chief Operating Officer – Traditional Businesses, where he will oversee operations across IHCL’s established hospitality brands.
For those who have watched Prabhat Verma’s journey over the years, his elevation comes as no surprise. His career has been defined by a people-first leadership style, operational excellence and a deep understanding of hospitality. His appointment as Chief People Officer marks another significant milestone—not only for him personally but also for IHCL as it prepares for its next chapter of global growth
