New Delhi, July 23: The Centre has initiated talks with representatives of the protest movement led by education reformer and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, marking the first formal engagement since his indefinite hunger strike began nearly a month ago.
The meeting comes amid growing concern over Wangchuk’s health. He was recently shifted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram following directions from the Delhi High Court after doctors warned of deteriorating medical conditions.
Despite the outreach, Wangchuk has said he will continue his fast until the government provides a written assurance that no punitive action will be taken against the young protesters who participated in the recent demonstrations. BJP president and Union Minister J.P. Nadda has assured that the government will respond to his concerns.
The protest has drawn nationwide attention, with opposition leaders, academics and civil society groups urging the Centre to engage in meaningful dialogue while expressing concern over Wangchuk’s health.
While the government’s decision to hold discussions is being viewed as a positive step, no breakthrough has been announced so far. Wangchuk has maintained that the hunger strike will continue until he receives concrete written assurances addressing his key demand for the protection of peaceful protesters
